From the 26th of May 2012 a new EU law comes into force that sets new rules around the use of cookies on websites and how your visitors are alerted by them.

Remind me again, what are cookies? Cookies make websites work better.

Cookies are small text files placed on your computer by websites or sometimes by emails. They provide useful information on how visitors interact with your website, which helps in all sorts of ways. In the simplest of cases Cookies help to analyse how your visitors interact with your site (Google Analytics).

So what’s this new law about?

In a nutshell, the law states that from the 26th of May all websites that use cookies have to notify visitors that cookies are being used and what for. This is pretty serious, there’s potentially a fine of up to £500,000 for websites that don’t comply. What do I need to do?

There are different levels of compliance, so you need to decide what you’re comfortable implementing on your site. Unfortunately with a law like this it’s not particularly black and white. But we’re on hand to help, so get in touch we’d be happy to talk through the options.

The chosen e-commerce platform is Magento which works very well for the client and integrates nicely with SagePay and other internal systems and also ties in nicely with Sweet Tooth; the e-commerce customer loyalty rewards programme.

In addition, for the customer’s benefit, we have incorporated comparison facilities; and enabled purchasers to submit reviews on products; as well as providing peer to peer recommendations.  The navigation incorporates Mega Menus giving the customer easy access to all products quickly.  With clear call to actions throughout the site we are sure it won’t be long before ROI is achieved.

His attention to detail and beady eye were called into action to peruse the latest Pro HTML5 Programming book which is aimed at helping the experienced web application developer increase the usability of forms, get websites working offline and generally manage data better.

Tony’s task was to diligently review each chapter and act as a sense check for development users to ensure that all code was accurate with any programme features clearly explained. Although at times there was a bit of midnight oil to burn, by suggesting alternatives and improvements, Tony’s assistance on this publication has helped to ensure that it can be as factually accurate and error free as possible.

We’ve got a bit of growth spurt going on at INK HQ which takes the shape of a budding new talented developer; Nicola Elvin whose key development skills lie in XHTML, CSS, mobile development and animation.  Nicola has many other talents that she will be applying to a range of projects for the benefit of our clients and we look forward to her joining our happy team and bringing a touch of magic to the INK blend.

For those of you who haven’t heard, we spent the last week and a bit working on a variety of digital media for an overseas sales exhibition. We created a beautifully engaging touchscreen application, a 3D CGI animated screensaver, launched a shiny new website and an interactive sales application for a few ipads. All this (and a few extra bits and bobs) were shipped over to Singapore early last week in preparation for another overseas sales expo.

Well the weekend is over, the sales guys have worked their socks off and aided by the digital media we created the results are amazing.

The biggest sales result in the last 3 years from an overseas expo!
